ORCP Project Strategy and Scope – Component A (Tech Transfer)
The Ottawa Technology Transfer Network (OTTN) builds on an informal collaboration among several academic technology transfer offices in Ottawa to enhance the economic impact of research commercialization through the sharing of best practices; enhanced market knowledge and proactive industrial interaction.
OTTN will establish shared invention review and technology marketing activities, through a single point of access to OTTN members through a common web portal. The OTTN portal will promote enhanced access by industry to researcher expertise, will facilitate invention disclosure and will increase the quality of the deal flow and technology commercialization.
OTTN will promote industrial access to research facilities, innovations and expertise through themed industrial research days and technology showcase forums for entrepreneurs and investors and will host an annual meeting of regional industry technology commercialization experts and academics to further facilitate industrial interaction. OTTN members have incredible research capability but it is not well known in industry.
OTTN will work with the OCRI Regional Innovation Development Program (OCRI-RIDP) Opportunity Network and the Ottawa Life Sciences Council (OLSC) to develop and market these events to local industry. By integrating the skills of all members, OTTN will provide a unique opportunity for research commercialization in the region. OTTN will provide a forum for research and commercialization success stories.
Core support for OTTN innovations will include intellectual property protection and project management support. OTTN will support the identification and protection of innovations from all OTTN members through the portal and through the use of a common invention management system to track and manage the invention commercialization process. OTTN will support the identification and protection of innovations from all members. Each disclosure will be reviewed and any development gaps identified in the review process will be addressed with project management assistance from industrial consultants with sector-specific market knowledge to enhance (and accelerate) the market readiness of the technology. OTTN will build on the current TTO focus of IP management to develop and accelerate more market-ready technology opportunities.
OTTN will also promote entrepreneurship and new venture creation for students through support for the Student Technology Venture Challenge and through entrepreneurship boot camp training with OCRI-RIDP. OTTN will also support technology transfer studentships – selected students from business, law, engineering, medicine, science and journalism – for project specific research commercialization activities.
ORCP Project Strategy and Scope – Component B (Proof-of-Principle)
The Eastern Ontario PoP (EO-PoP) will accelerate research discoveries towards commercial applications and promote the engagement of the business community. The EO-POP will accelerate the development of research discoveries towards commercialization and will attract and retain highly qualified, entrepreneurial, people interested in technology ventures. EO-PoP will:
· provide early stage support for promising research discoveries to further them along the development pipeline towards commercialization;
· create new opportunities for innovators to network and for research commercialization practices to be exchanged across the region;
· identify opportunities for increased regional industrial (technology, business, investor) mentoring to enhance the commercialization opportunity for research innovations;
· provide students with valuable work experience and skills development in the areas of technology commercialization, entrepreneurship and innovation management.
EO-PoP fund will be organized across 12 institutions along two regional nodes, Kingston (PARTEQ, Queen’s, RMC, KGH, St. Lawrence College, and industry partners E.I. du Pont Canada Company and Novelis Global Technology Centre) and Ottawa (uOttawa, NCIT, OHRI, CHEO, UOHI, OLSC, OCRI, Algonquin College). Each node will be managed by one site (uOttawa and PARTEQ) and will responsible for 50% of the PoP funds. Industrially-led regional review committees will meet at least quarterly to assess projects presented by the participating institutions. The two groups will meet at least annually to share best practices and opportunities for collaboration.
